What makes this different from most scholarships is not only of interest which Laurie Dippenaar, Chairman of FirstRand, is in the process of selection, but also his interest in the continued progress of the recipient.
Shortlisted candidates will be notified at the end of April 2012 and should be available for final interviews to be held in Johannesburg, in April 2013. A final announcement will be made before the end of May 2013.
Scholarship criteria are presented below. The candidate is required to return to South Africa for at least five years after completing his studies, as stipulated by SARS.
The following factors are considered in awarding the scholarship:
• academic excellence;
• leadership qualities;
• community participation and
• ability to be a change of fate.
Preference is given to applicants under 35 years and it must be for the first time study abroad. Applicants must have applied and been conditionally accepted by their university of choice for graduate courses they wish to pursue in April 2013.
Applications will be treated in strict confidentiality.
The referees will not consider support beyond a period of two years. Any extension beyond the first year will be reported satisfactory progress of the candidate and the institution at the end of the first year of study.
The decision of the arbitral tribunal is final and correspondence regarding the decision will not be reached. The panel reserves the right not to make an award.
