Centre for Chinese Studies (CCS) is awarding a postdoctoral research fellowship in East Asian (Chinese) and African Studies. This fellowship is open for citizens of all nationalities but South African nationals are particularly encouraged to apply. Candidates must have a doctoral degree, obtained in the past five years, in a discipline relevant to CCS research themes, preferably with a focus on East Asia (specifically China) and Africa. The eligible applicant will receive annual grant of R216 000. The application deadline is 31 August, 2015.

Eligibility:
-Candidates must have a doctoral degree, obtained in the past five years, in a discipline relevant to CCS research themes, preferably with a focus on East Asia (specifically China) and Africa. Working knowledge of Mandarin will be a particularly strong asset for the position. The position is likely to involve empirical research in African or East Asian countries; the willingness and ability to travel is assumed. Candidates are expected to undertake independent research, with limited supervision with a view to publishing original and innovative results in DHET accredited journals, present research at academic seminars and at national and international conferences, and collaborate with other researchers at a national level. Collaborate with senior staff to actively seek and secure external funding, assist to prepare and submit research proposals to external funding bodies as appropriate. Contribute to the education program of the Centre, which may include but not limited to, mentoring in the PhD program, teaching and the design and development of coursework modules.

Thier policy relevant analysis is non-partisan and based on academic standards. The Centre also conducts relevant commissioned analysis of East Asian-related research for government, business, academia and NGO communities. Their main research vocation is exploring the drivers of and trends in China’s engagement with Africa. Focusing on three thematic areas: political, economic and environmental, they, seek to strengthen our research team with an ambitious postdoctoral research fellow in the area of East Asian (Chinese) and/or African Studies.
