UN Women is the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. In 2012, UN Women has extended its work to include the Arab Region through UN Women’s Regional Office for Arab States (ROAS). UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls, the empowerment of women, and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world.
Duties and Responsibilities
Service overview:

UN Women Regional Office for Arab States in Cairo requires an advocacy intern to support the gender innovation and advocacy aspects of the office.

The Objectives of the Assignment:

Under the overall supervision and directly reporting to UN Women advocacy lead, the candidate is expected to:

  • Support the growth of ROAS youth network and coordinate its volunteers;
  • Assist with the coordination and logistical preparation for multi-agency events;
  • Support in planning and development of campaigns and coordination of events and meetings.

The intern is required to develop the following products:

  • Support the expansion of the youth network and coordination of its volunteers;
  • Support the Gender Innovation Agora initiative in planning and preparation of innovation activities focusing on behavioral change projects;
  • Assist in planning and implementation of advocacy campaigns;
  • Other assignments required by the Youth, Advocacy and Innovation Programme Specialist;
  • Support the production and regular update of ROAS advocacy briefs.

Required Skills and Experience
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Experience in writing, editing and producing creative content.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Background in youth and gender issues or engagement of men and boys in gender equality.
  • Background and experience in digital media production or graphics design is a plus.

Applicants should meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent) or;
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year.

UN Women Internship Policy:

  • UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women;
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN WOMEN during the period of the internship;
  • Selected applicants must provide the internship application, two letters of recommendation, proof of health insurance and school enrolment, passport, National ID and visa (if applicable).
